American Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) hardwood cuttings for establishing your own elderberry bushes.

Dormant hardwood cuttings are made when the plant is in their dormant state and will ship to you as dormant sticks.  They do not have roots established yet, they need to be planted in cold weather before the 2nd week in March.

About American elderberries, Sambucus canadensis:

  • Native to the U.S., with berries processable at cooler temperatures than European Sambucus nigra.
  • Thrive in full sun but can grow in part shade.
  • Prefer moist, organic-rich soil with a pH of 5.5–7.5.
  • Can tolerate drought but benefit from irrigation.
  • Does not require two varieties for pollination but it can increase yields.

About the Varieties

Adams

  • 8 to 10 feet tall
  • Indeterminate- produces fruit continuously over a period
  • Excellent yields
  • Renowned for its sweetness
  • One of the oldest cultivars from New York

Bob Gordon

  • 6 to 8 feet tall
  • Determinate-produces all its fruit within a shorter time frame
  • Larger berries than those of Adams
  • Higher brix and often chosen for the sweetness in the berries; great for wine

Caring for Your Cuttings

  • Cuttings will be in bags with moist sphagnum moss.
  • You may keep cuttings in your refrigerator until your ground is thawed and you’re ready to plant.
  • Dormant hardwood cuttings should be planted no later than the 2nd week of March, outdoors in soil.
  • Cuttings should be kept constantly moist, if they dry out even for a few hours they may not make it.
  • We will include planting instructions in each order.
